Today, we're taking you back to 2012, when London based MC/Producer Tom Dice dropped his vocal debut 'Rhythms of Dice' LP that features our Friday Flashback tune of the day, "Only The Beginning". The subject matter of the tune is a flashback within a flashback, with mentions of Hip-Hop icons and record labels of the 1980s. Its uptempo beat and driving bass line makes this cut an ideal track for B-Boys and B-Girls to strut their stuff on some linoleum. For all my vinyl junkies, aside from this being a fresh record to have in your collection, what makes it extra special is there were only 100 copies of the 7" pressed up and they are hand numbered by Dice himself. Consider yourself very lucky if you copped the vinyl.
During the absence of blog posts over the last two years, The Record Realm has still been doing its share of work within the music and arts community by co-producing a number of Hip-Hop shows, as well as the latest installment called Reggae On The Rail, which featured live Reggae bands from the Houston Metropolitan area and myself (DJ Kool Emdee) spinning Reggae, Rocksteady and Dub music. Another thing that developed in that time span is a series of podcasts, consisting of many different styles and genres to give listeners an idea of the musical diversity of DJ Kool Emdee.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the latest edition of the podcast series that's power-packed with some soulful goodies, ranging from the likes of Danish producer Kriswontwo, Calamity, Da U.A, Philippe Edison, George Duke, and more. Currently we are transferring podcast files from Soundcloud to our new home at HearThis.at. More podcasts will be uploaded over time. Give us a follow to stay updated.
Hailing from the beautiful country of Kenya, Nairobi based drummer Moseh Drumist continues to bring love, peace, happiness, and inspiration through his music. The multi-talented musician believes that "edutainment" is a key factor in bringing harmony among all people from different walks of life. His latest musical offering, "Wanichanganya" urges us to 'appreciate love and life' with the fire of the Equatorial House sound. The blending of traditional instruments with modern electronic sounds makes for a motivational groove that will give the irresistible urge to move.

For my producers reading this post, I was alerted to sound packs created by Moseh for Ableton Live consisting of Ohangla drums of the Luo culture in western Kenya. On the drum's hypnotic power:

"These drums were used in sacred celebration ceremonies – their sounds are therapeutic and possess the audience. When I play these drums people usually go into a trance... It takes their souls on a journey."

You can access sound packs from Moseh and the Santuri Safari by clicking HERE. Subscribe to his YouTube Channel to stay updated on new videos, interviews, and where to purchase his music and merchandise.
The Kokoroko Afrobeat Collective was born a few years ago of a family of friends in music school who shared the love of music, particularly the music and message of Fela Kuti. At the suggestion of a friend to start their own band (not taken seriously, at first), it is Fela's music that gave the fuel and passion for the group to put their own spin on Afrobeat by fusing the sounds of West Africa, with a hint of Southern Africa, and the fire of the London music scene.

As a tribute to their beloved musical hero, the collective has done an excellent cover of Fela's "Colonial Mentality". Here's a live performance from 2016 at the Sofar Sounds headquarters.
A staple in the Houston House music scene, Dion Seasar (Soletickler) has delighted us with his latest banging mix for autumn. We, here at The Record Realm would like to wish the late, great "Father of Afro-Beat", Fela Anikulapo Kuti (15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), a very happy birthday in remembrance of his legacy through music and activism. To celebrate the occasion, our own resident DJ Kool Emdee has mixed up a special batch of remixed and re-imagined Fela originals. Press play and enjoy!
I planned to go with another tune that featured this gifted vocalist, but decided to go with "Let It Go", taken from the self-titled debut LP by Shaun Escoffery. Spring is here, which has also been a season of change for people spiritually and mentally. This song is the perfect message to help get rid of unneeded baggage and progress forward on a lighter and brighter note. In a short video I saw two days ago, DJ Jazzy Jeff recommended this dope mix by DJ Day from 1999 where he's bringing the funk like you know he's known for. Jeff said this is his favorite mix to listen to before he gets on the decks himself. Stream or download the goodness.
My apologies for not posting this sooner. For those in the Austin area, you still have a bit of time to catch the premier of this historical movie, that's already raising eyebrows, about the TR-808 drum machine that revolutionized and changed music forever. Log on to the 808: The Movie official website for more information on additional showtimes and theaters that will host the viewing.
For those who have seen "The Five Heartbeats" movie (scroll to 2:22 if you haven't), like the mother who stood up in this clip, that is the same feeling I had in listening to the soul filled production on "Phela Nguwe", the latest single from King Bayaa, the South African DJ/producer who is set to release his Been Around EP on Baainar Records. To help kick off the celebration and a bit of anticipation, he's offering his first single as a free download. Enjoy!
While many people tend to label others, it goes to show you that a lot of ignorance is not going away any time soon. However, there are people who work tirelessly to extinguish it. Enter Rahj Mason and Mor Loud, the Brooklyn spiritual brothers who have teamed up to release this massive rock tune that asks the serious question about police brutality in its title; "How Many Shots?"

Artists from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds have unified in the past and there are those presently who continue to unify and use music and their art as a tool to awaken the consciousness of the people to help bring about more unity and change. Support for artists like Rahj and Mor, who also encourage people to love, is very important. Not only are they composing battle cries to fight oppression, they are asking for basic life fundamentals for the masses to respect and honor one another. Change has come.
I have mad respect for Kriswontwo, the mad Danish producer who calls Copenhagen home. I was chatting it up a bit with him earlier today and he alerted me to his latest video where he was challenged by the Boondigga crew to do a track sampling all three randomly selected records from a few stacks while blindfolded. The results....a banger as usual. Check out the video, then leave a comment on the Youtube page to give a shout. Or, follow Kriswontwo on Twitter.
The mission; operation snatch-back. With the focus shifting back to the DJ, which is the foundation of Hip-Hop, DJ Lord has dropped a new sound bombing upon us from the vaults of the newly launched Rap Central Station website that has been around for less than a year. "World Citizen" is the latest single from Lord's Eat The Rat solo debut LP that features 2MP (2 Much Posse). This is a serious attack on the wack with razor sharp cuts, verbal assaults, and a critical beatdown through production. If you have never witnessed DJ Lord on stage with Public Enemy or his solo DJ sets, brother is a one man show that sends crowds into frenzies.
Today we pay tribute to a legend. Her name is Nina Simone, known also as the "High Priestess of Soul". A couple of years ago I put together a compilation of her tunes to help tell a story as she is known to do. It will make you dance, shout, and hit you deep down to your core.
If you want to book a multidimensional person for your live show or studio project, then David Sha is the man. A long time friend of mine and another very consistent brother who has the flow of an emcee, the soulfulness and chops of a gifted singer, an excellent poet and songwriter, and when he steps on stage and is really to take you to that higher level, there's absolutely no way you can deny it.

As of recent, he has dropped his long-awaited UGLY Mixtape that is chock full of banger after banger. As I mention on Facebook, listening to it did what it describes itself as, made me ugly from twisting up my face and my neck hurting from all the head-nod biz. Just as impressive as Mr. Sha is, so is the co-stars of this project. On hand is Austin based band Riders Against The Storm (RAS), and Houston emcees K-Rino and EQuality. When you purchase the mixtape, you will get full versions of each song unmixed, as well as the soundbombing mixed version by DJ Youl. Download and get ready to rumble!
I just caught wind of the beats dropped last month by Houston producer E.Classic, who has done tracks for a few local groups. I really like how this guy is consistent with the tunes he churns out, which makes him one who can rumble with the best of them. It was sort of hard to pick one tune out of this batch, but since night is upon us, I thought I would go with a groove that's fitting.
It was so pleasant to hear Fatima when I first laid ears on her voice on Shafiq Husayn's Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka album from 2009. Since that time, i've been hooked. This past summer she released her highly anticipated debut LP Yellow Memories that enlists some great producers, including Eglo Records label head Floating Points. Speaking of Points, here is the latest video of "Biggest Joke of All" that he produced the track for.
Today is the birthday of songstress Sy Smith and the Modern Groove Assembly, led by Steve Catanzaro has done a wonderful tribute to this gifted singer-songwriter. I had the pleasure of meeting her a couple of years ago after seeing her perform with The Foreign Exchange. This beautiful lady has the spirit to match. One of my latest all Hip-Hop mixes that features some local talent and other well known indie acts. A few classics from the 1990s are mixed in as well. Listen, enjoy, and be sure to look the artists up. There's a complete tracklist to accompany the mix. Enjoy!
For all those celebrating Valentine's Day here stateside, here is a compilation of ballads I put together last year to help make things a little more cozy. Sit back, relax, and let the music be your guide. Don't forget, this is not limited to just one day.
