Total Sounds is a record label in Kingston, Jamaica that archives early recordings from Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, U-Roy, John Holt, and an extensive roster of young talent who went on to be well known across the world. The focus this week is the sounds of Johnny Clarke, a well respected favorite in Jamaica and amongst Reggae enthusiasts.
Discovered after winning a talent contest, his first recording didn't make much of an impact due to lack of promotion of the single. After moving on to several producers and scoring moderate hits, Clarke would end up recording with producer Bunny Lee and his band The Aggrovators in 1974. "None Shall Escape" (1974) was an instant success and became the title track of his debut LP, which earned him the Artist of the Year award in Jamaica for 1975 and 1976. None Shall Escape was mixed in its entirety by the innovator of dub, King Tubby.
