Mos Def [now known as Yasiin Bey] created "Umi Says" to sum it up perfectly, mentioning how his mother ["umi" means mother in Arabic] tells him to "shine your light on the world/shine your light for the world to see". Taken from his 1999 solo debut Black On Both Sides, the track was produced by Mos Def and David Kennedy, with instrumentation help from will.i.am on the Fender Rhodes and the legendary Weldon Irvine on the Hammond organ.
