Fracture: Loving Touch

In January of this year OM Unit hosted a segment on Rinse FM that featured a lot of forthcoming releases. One tune in particular that grabbed my attention was by Fracture, with his future bass remake of Ralphi Rosario's classic house tune "You Used To Hold Me" (1987). Not sure on a release date, but I for one am waiting patiently for it to drop. For those who haven't heard it yet, here's a sneak peek.

DJ of the Week: dj NIMBUS

As we set sail on a new Record Realm blog adventure, for our maiden voyage we are featuring our first entry for the week of Sept. 5 - 12, by the name of dj NIMBUS to kick off this segment that will feature different DJs that I know from around the world each week.

Nimbus has been making his rounds across the country and the globe tearing up the club and lounge scenes, as well as making his mark at many of the big electronic music festivals spinning deep soulful House grooves, tribal and Afro-House, to taking you back down memory lane with classic 80's and 90's House. He also hit you hard with classic Hip-Hop joints with his partner in crime DJ Burb, for their monthly installment called "Paid In Full". Just this past weekend he dropped another bomb on his podcast page for you to jack to. Keep your eyes and ears open as he soon will make waves on the beaches of Mexico. DJ Roland Clark ft. Robin S: All of Me

To take from the words of LL Cool J..."Don't call it a come-back, I've been here for years.."; the same can be said of veteran vocalist Robin S who topped the dance charts in the U.S. and U.K. with her smash single "Show Me Love" in the early 90's. After taking time off to focus on her personal life, she teams up with DJ Roland Clark for their current release "All of Me" that will drop on April 2nd on Delete Records.

With the deep musical arrangement, with a far east twist from Roland, along with Robin's hallelujah style vocals over the track, this duo gives it reason to be called "Deep House". "All of Me" will seep deep down into you to move more than just your feet. Another prime example of the classics never ceasing. Happy Birthday: Farley Jackmaster Funk

I was first introduced to the Chicago House sound by my best friend Dewayne (DBO, DJ Chi-Dawg) around 1984. I've mentioned before about how we used to walk to school jammin' to House and Hip-Hop mixtapes (actual cassette tapes...HA!) on a boombox. Those House mixes we mainly listened to were done by none other than the legendary "King of House Music" DJ Farley Jackmaster Funk on WBMX 102.7 FM. I remember clearly hearing him scratching "Farley" flawlessly as he spun live on air. You would hear tunes like "Jack Your Body", "Move Your Body", "Let No Man Put Asunder" and other House classics. Then, the master himself releases "Love Can't Turn Around" with Darryl Pandy in 1986. My first time hearing the tune gave me goosebumps and I still consider it to be the greatest House tune ever. Mr. Farley, we salute you!

Who knew that back in 1983, when my dad Anthony Stephens was sitting around with his band in Montreal, Canada, smoking, drinking and vibing in the studio that they’d record a song that would still be heard around the world almost 30 years later. In 1986, The Source approached gospel singer Candi Staton about putting her vocals on the track and together, her and The Source delivered, “You Got The Love.” While it would be easy to say, “the rest is history,” that would be lying.

The song barely registered on the Billboard charts when it was released in the United States. For years, royalty checks ranged from the $100s to sometimes less than a $1 (I still have the stubs, by the way). And then in 1991, DJ Eren released a bootleg mix of it in the UK with Candi’s vocals laid over the house song “Your Love.” DJ Eren’s mix reached #4 on the UK charts. Because of the success from Eren’s bootleg mix, the song has been remixed into a dance version, a Euro rock version, had a splash of reggae added to it, and then covered and returned to its soulful roots.

Since 1991, the song has steadily been on the UK charts, and has been licensed for corporate events, movies (Layer Cake), TV shows (Sex and City Series Finale), TV promos (Grey’s Anatomy), reality shows (T.O. Show season finale), and more. In 2009, it was released by both Florence and The Machine (UK’s Best New Artist) and Joss Stone (soulful artist extraordinaire); two artists who have widely different audiences, but who can appreciate a good song. Asked why she decided to cover, “You Got The Love,” Joss Stone replied, “I appreciate other people's writing and music as well as my own and it's a great song!” With both of their releases, the success of “You Got the Love” reached heights never before seen in its history.

And yet for all its international success, nobody's ever heard of the song, The Source, or Anthony Stephens, the primary creator behind the song. The success of this song overseas, shows that there are many ways to achieve success in the music business and it doesn’t always include becoming a household name. Only four members from the original band are still living, but Anthony Stephens and his business partner John Bellamy will continue to take advantage of the song’s popularity as long as people enjoy the song. Look for The Source magic to continue in 2011 with new music from their production company Tri-She*Kieta in 2011. Underworld: Barking

It's been 30 years that British duo Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, better known as Underworld have been recording together. Both met while attending a university together and they are considered pioneers in electronic music within the UK. Their last full length album was released 3 years ago and they return with Barking. Written in it's entirety by them in their Essex studio, they hand picked a few producers to lend a hand with dance tracks that cover a wide range. Those who are familiar with electronic music producers, High Contrast, Dub Fire and Paul Van Dyke have lent their talents. Barking is set for U.S. release on September 14th on OM Records. "Gotta Have House......Music"

This post is for my best friend De'Wayne (since 9th Grade) who's from Chicago and now living on the East coast. He's also one of the people responsible for helping me to take my mixing skills to another level by having me practice almost everyday after school. In high school we caught many by surprise b/c they didn't know we were DJs until we appeared on the school talent show w/ our Hip-Hop group called the Def Crew, which consisted of 2 DJs, 3 MCs, and 2 B-Boys/Dancers. To go by his old school name, "DJ Chi-Dawg" introduced me to the Chicago House sound in the early 80's by the tapes he recorded from the Chi-town radio station WBMX. As we walked to school nearly every morning carrying a boombox, that really helped put the pep in our step to try and keep tempo while we trotted down the block. Two or three years ago, I went to a thrift store and regained many of the singles that are included in this mix at the cost of about 50 cents for 12"s and a dollar for LPs. You may even hear a few crackles in the vinyl. To help relive those analog memories, grab a copy of the mix below. Part two will be posted soon. Bless Brother!
