David Sha: The Ugly Mixtape

If you want to book a multidimensional person for your live show or studio project, then David Sha is the man. A long time friend of mine and another very consistent brother who has the flow of an emcee, the soulfulness and chops of a gifted singer, an excellent poet and songwriter, and when he steps on stage and is really to take you to that higher level, there's absolutely no way you can deny it.

As of recent, he has dropped his long-awaited UGLY Mixtape that is chock full of banger after banger. As I mention on Facebook, listening to it did what it describes itself as, made me ugly from twisting up my face and my neck hurting from all the head-nod biz. Just as impressive as Mr. Sha is, so is the co-stars of this project. On hand is Austin based band Riders Against The Storm (RAS), and Houston emcees K-Rino and EQuality. E.Classic: A Few From The Stash Vol. 3

I just caught wind of the beats dropped last month by Houston producer E.Classic, who has done tracks for a few local groups. I really like how this guy is consistent with the tunes he churns out, which makes him one who can rumble with the best of them. It was sort of hard to pick one tune out of this batch, but since night is upon us, I thought I would go with a groove that's fitting.

Dannie Walker: We Are O.N.E.

For your early morning riser, we present the brand new single "We Are O.N.E." from Houston's own Dannie Walker, a very talented lady who's on her way to carving her name into the memories of those who take in her message. With Jett I. Masstyr on production, the track borrows from the 1960s style swing of popular R&B tunes, overlaid with the soothing vocals of Dannie reminding us to keep on having love and value in ourselves, then the rest will be easy to spread to others. With the way things have been lately, this is a song that's needed for the people to help keep the inspiration going. "Keep your head to the sky!"

Happy Birthday: Bob Marley

Today would have been the 70th birthday of legendary music icon Robert "Bob" Marley, the "King of Reggae". Although gone in physical form, his spirit and music lives on in the hearts and minds of many. This weekend in Houston there will be festivities from the 1st Fridays crew with their Shades of Red party on tonight, and the Bob Marley Wear Affair that will feature the veteran sounds of Everton Blender on tomorrow. The Suffers: Make Some Room (Official Video)

Kam Franklin has the pipes to blow the roof off any venue she performs in. I'm not talking an instrument, per se, i'm speaking of the vocal swagger reminiscent of Chaka Khan, Bettye Lavette, and other greats before her. Fronting Houston's own funk band The Suffers, they are moving up in the ranks of people to look out for in 2015. Two nights ago, they did a very impressive set and tore it up in front of a jam packed house at Houston's legendary concert venue, Fitzgerald's.

The Suffers have recently released their highly anticipated Make Some Room EP, along with their first official video of the title track. You can purchase in physical form or simply as a digital download. Every physical copy comes with codes to access the digital format. Don't forget to pick up merchandise while you're shopping. Turntable Tuesdays: Bro. Jibril: J.Salaam Heavyweight

For this edition of Turntable Tuesdays we are featuring the sounds of one bad motor scooter on the wheels, Bro. Jibril. In my eyes, he's one of those among the ranks of "A DJ's DJ" and is a great supporter of other DJs and artists. Pacman: Some Assembly Required

If you are in the Houston area and have attended any of the Underground Merger sets, then you have heard my homie Pacman rock the mic. Being in Hip-Hop for as long as I have, Pacman is an artist I would happily pass the torch to, to keep the culture alive. To see him perform live, he's the definition of an MC. He can surely move the crowd.

Friday Flashback: En Vogue: Hold On

The year was 1990. While attending Club Palladium, which was one of Houston's best clubs ever, the late DJ Lonnie Mack [of Def IV] takes a quick pause to introduce a new track by a new all female singing group from Oakland, by mentioning what a huge tune it was going to be. He drops the needle at the very beginning and suddenly you hear the intro, an A Capella rendition of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You". When they reach the end of the first verse, holding the last word and harmonizing together, suddenly a big bass drop kicks off the beginning of one of the hardest R&B tracks of all time. The crowd lost their minds.

The name of the group was En Vogue, consisting of members Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis, and Cindy Herron. "Hold On" was the first single released off their platinum selling debut studio album Born To Sing which was released in April 1990. By June it was certified at gold status by the RIAA. Topping charts in both the U.S. and U.K., Born To Sing earned the group the most awards won by any female group in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards, a total of seven, along with five Soul Train Awards, six American Music Awards, and seven Grammy nominations. "Hold On" sampled the songs "Synthetic Substitution" by Melvin Bliss and "The Payback" by James Brown.

K Dubb: Ultimate Life

Taking this time to salute and give continued respect to my big brother [no pun intended] Sir Keith Watson/K-Dubb, by wishing him a happy belated birthday and to feature one of his tracks. I must say this is one of the best producers in the city of Houston. K-Dubb has an extensive production catalog of R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, international music, and more, that goes on for hours. To give you a taste, here's one of my favorites titled "Ultimate Life". You can also catch K-Dubb co-hosting "The Groove" with Bobby Phats on Monday nights on KPFT 90.1 FM-Houston.

Friday Flashback: Kuumba Freeque

I'm feeling a bi super for this Friday. So we're gonna take you back to the sounds of Houston's own Kuumba Freeque [K'Monte Allen & Tresa Jerrel] with their unique funky style of rock n' soul. "SupaHero" is the lead single taken from their critically acclaimed debut REZUREKSHUN (2011), written and produced by Kuumba Freeque.

Underground Merger x AntLive Studio: The Return of Real Hip-Hop Houston

For those living in Houston and surrounding areas, we would love for you to make plans to join us for The Return of Real Hip-Hop Houston, hosted by Underground Merger and AntLive Studio at Taqueria La Macro, a nice little restaurant located just north of downtown. May 9th marks our second set at this new location, which is next to the light rail.

Every set is a celebration of the culture of Hip-Hop for all ages, complete with live DJs [including myself], B-Boys/B-Girls, emcees, and graffiti artists painting live. There's an open mic to test your freestyle skills, as well as scheduled performances. While you're being entertained, grab a bite and some brews from the bar and kitchen. Taqueria La Macro was voted as the Houston Press Best Taqueria Houston 2013 and Best Breakfast Tacos Houston 2013. Admission is free, but you can always drop something in the tip jar.

DJ Wonji: Ready To Drop

It's been awhile since we've posted new music from DJ Wonji, one of our favorite DJ/producers. For the last few days I have been bumpin' his latest tech-house creation titled "Ready To Drop", that's reminiscent of a track from the 1990s, yet updated. The intro of the tune seems to make it automatic for you to grab a partner and make way to the dancefloor.
