The Record Realm Podcast #17

During the absence of blog posts over the last two years, The Record Realm has still been doing its share of work within the music and arts community by co-producing a number of Hip-Hop shows, as well as the latest installment called Reggae On The Rail, which featured live Reggae bands from the Houston Metropolitan area and myself (DJ Kool Emdee) spinning Reggae, Rocksteady and Dub music. Another thing that developed in that time span is a series of podcasts, consisting of many different styles and genres to give listeners an idea of the musical diversity of DJ Kool Emdee.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the latest edition of the podcast series that's power-packed with some soulful goodies, ranging from the likes of Danish producer Kriswontwo, Calamity, Da U.A, Philippe Edison, George Duke, and more. Currently we are transferring podcast files from Soundcloud to our new home at HearThis.at. More podcasts will be uploaded over time. Give us a follow to stay updated.

Turntable Tuesdays: DJ Day: Credit Is Due

In a short video I saw two days ago, DJ Jazzy Jeff recommended this dope mix by DJ Day from 1999 where he's bringing the funk like you know he's known for. Jeff said this is his favorite mix to listen to before he gets on the decks himself. Stream or download the goodness.

Friday Flashback: Groove Collective: Lift Off

Since it's the birthday of former band member Nappy G, I thought it's only fitting to have this week's flashback to feature a song from Groove Collective, of which he played percussion, rapped, and helped write some of the band's material. My favorite tune from them is "Lift Off", a feel good groove from their 1996 album titled We The People.

Happy Birthday: Nappy G

Hats off as we wish Brooklyn producer, DJ, and musician Nappy G a very happy birthday. He's one of the founding members and songwriters of the legendary and pioneering acid jazz band, Groove Collective, as well as half of the sure-shot party rockers called Turntables On The Hudson. A couple of hours ago he dropped a new mix on us just in time for Valentine's Day. Listen to the mix and drop him some well wishes.

The Rebirth: Being Thru The Eyes of A Child

I heard through the music grapevine that an album by The Rebirth was in the works and got really excited by the news. As of yesterday, the Los Angeles band released their second studio album in almost thirteen years. You can preview the album here, but I would suggest just getting it based on their track record and integrity. Being Thru The Eye of A Child is available now through online retailers like iTunes, CD Baby, and other music stores.

The Suffers: Make Some Room (Official Video)

Kam Franklin has the pipes to blow the roof off any venue she performs in. I'm not talking an instrument, per se, i'm speaking of the vocal swagger reminiscent of Chaka Khan, Bettye Lavette, and other greats before her. Fronting Houston's own funk band The Suffers, they are moving up in the ranks of people to look out for in 2015. Two nights ago, they did a very impressive set and tore it up in front of a jam packed house at Houston's legendary concert venue, Fitzgerald's.

The Suffers have recently released their highly anticipated Make Some Room EP, along with their first official video of the title track. You can purchase in physical form or simply as a digital download. Every physical copy comes with codes to access the digital format. Don't forget to pick up merchandise while you're shopping. Keep up to date with their upcoming tour by logging on to their website.

Jneiro Jarel: Camouflaged Thieves

A major salute to my homie Jneiro Jarel as he kicks off 2015 with a single that's as aggressive as the soldiers and police officers in this military state these governments are trying to force us into. "Camouflaged Thieves" is a fusion of tribal drumming, a funky bassline, and the rhythmic styling of garage music. This is the first single taken from his upcoming Indio EP that will be dropping soon. Get the vocal and instrumental by way of Bandcamp.

Afrolicious: Rise Up

With the event that happened on yesterday in St. Louis, I thought it to be perfect timing to post the new tune by Afrolicious called "Rise Up". I meant to blog about this tune weeks ago, but it slipped my mind. This may have been the reason why. If you're not familiar with Afrolicious, they are an amazing multi-genre band based in San Francisco, founded by brothers Joe "Pleasuremaker" McGuire and Oz "Señor Oz" McGuire, who also double up as a DJ/Production duo known as the Afrolicious Soundsystem.

If you're in the San Francisco area, check out their weekly residency at the Elbo Room, located in the city's Mission District. When going to show your support, just remember this mantra...."It's a party, not a show!"

Happy Birthday: Dynamite Dave Soul

The Record Realm wishes a blessed earthstrong to the one and only Dynamite Dave Soul, curator of WTDK Revolutionary Radio based in Atlanta. Not only is he a master of the mix, but he is one of the few in the culture who has stuck to using vinyl for his DJ sets. If you're ever in the Atlanta metro area, be sure to find out where he's spinning and have yourself a good time. For now, listen to one of his podcasts to give you a taste of what this tastemaker has to offer.

Friday Flashback: Pamoja: Oooh, Baby

Here's a rare funky Northern soul groove that has recent come back on radar. It's been many years since I've heard this record and am enjoying to hear it again. Pamoja (means "together" in ki-swahili) was a group from Chicago that consisted of songwriter and arranger Keith Stevenson and his former wife, who originally released "Oooh, Baby" as a b-side in 1975 on his own Keiper Production label. Originals of this record are very hard to find because there were only 1,000 pressed for the Chicago area. However, in 2009, Lotus Land Records & Tapes reissued the 45 RPM single with one of Stevenson's other tunes called "Paradise" with a group he later formed called Jewel.

GRiZ: Fall In Love Too Fast (Exmag Remix)

On my way to get something to eat, I was listening to the Chill station on XM Radio and this awesome remix of GRiZ's "Fall In Love Too Fast" by New York City electronic band Exmag caught my attention. I get back here to headquarters to search for this tasty treat to see it is a free download! Sign up for his mailing list on his website and you get a bonus. Not much to ask for to get some goodies. Just remember, your support helps make that happen.

Pomo: Start Again Ft. Andrea Cormier

"Start Again" is the first single from his debut EP The Other Day that will be released soon on HW&W Recordings. Vocals are provided by ambient and acoustic performer Andrea Cormier. Pomo is currently on tour. Check for show dates and venues.

Kuumba Freeque: 8 Nytez N NYC [ft. Kila Jai, Bel-Ami, & R.A.P. Phenomenal]

If you heard the broadcast of The Groove about a month ago, then you heard this track by Houston's own Kuumba Freeque, who knocked this big tune out while on a visit to New York City for an artists showcase. Additional vocals are from songstress Kila Jai, Bel-Ami, and New Jersey rap sensation R.A.P. Phenomenal. Grab this free download via Bandcamp and go check out their show if you're in Houston.

Since the summer is sizzling with plenty of great music to last for several seasons to come, I decided to put together this mix to celebrate this time of warmth. Packed with memorable originals and action packed remixes, this blend of tunes should help to get you in a partying groove. Currently, SITC has been climbing the Top 100 R&B chart on Mixcloud. It started out as #100, but has climbed up 40 places, cruising at #60 for now. If you guys help to get it past #40, i'll supply a download link. Share & Enjoy!
