The Record Realm Podcast #17

During the absence of blog posts over the last two years, The Record Realm has still been doing its share of work within the music and arts community by co-producing a number of Hip-Hop shows, as well as the latest installment called Reggae On The Rail, which featured live Reggae bands from the Houston Metropolitan area and myself (DJ Kool Emdee) spinning Reggae, Rocksteady and Dub music. Another thing that developed in that time span is a series of podcasts, consisting of many different styles and genres to give listeners an idea of the musical diversity of DJ Kool Emdee.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the latest edition of the podcast series that's power-packed with some soulful goodies, ranging from the likes of Danish producer Kriswontwo, Calamity, Da U.A, Philippe Edison, George Duke, and more. Currently we are transferring podcast files from Soundcloud to our new home at HearThis.at. More podcasts will be uploaded over time. Give us a follow to stay updated.

Turntable Tuesdays: DJ Day: Credit Is Due

In a short video I saw two days ago, DJ Jazzy Jeff recommended this dope mix by DJ Day from 1999 where he's bringing the funk like you know he's known for. Jeff said this is his favorite mix to listen to before he gets on the decks himself. Stream or download the goodness.

King Bayaa Ft S'bu: Phela Nguwe

For those who have seen "The Five Heartbeats" movie (scroll to 2:22 if you haven't), like the mother who stood up in this clip, that is the same feeling I had in listening to the soul filled production on "Phela Nguwe", the latest single from King Bayaa, the South African DJ/producer who is set to release his Been Around EP on Baainar Records. To help kick off the celebration and a bit of anticipation, he's offering his first single as a free download. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday: Nina Simone

Today we pay tribute to a legend. Her name is Nina Simone, known also as the "High Priestess of Soul". A couple of years ago I put together a compilation of her tunes to help tell a story as she is known to do. It will make you dance, shout, and hit you deep down to your core.

E.Classic: A Few From The Stash Vol. 3

I just caught wind of the beats dropped last month by Houston producer E.Classic, who has done tracks for a few local groups. I really like how this guy is consistent with the tunes he churns out, which makes him one who can rumble with the best of them. It was sort of hard to pick one tune out of this batch, but since night is upon us, I thought I would go with a groove that's fitting.

Happy Birthday: Nappy G

Hats off as we wish Brooklyn producer, DJ, and musician Nappy G a very happy birthday. He's one of the founding members and songwriters of the legendary and pioneering acid jazz band, Groove Collective, as well as half of the sure-shot party rockers called Turntables On The Hudson. A couple of hours ago he dropped a new mix on us just in time for Valentine's Day. Listen to the mix and drop him some well wishes.

Miss Baby Sol: The Future ft. Speech Debelle

For awhile, I have been wondering when Miss Baby Sol was planning to release her own album after a string of singles and appearances on other projects. That time is drawing near. An official release date for her debut An Inconvenient Truth is still to be determined, however, the new single "The Future" is more than enough to tie you over. While using her own brand of soul to address the ills of the present, her vocal partner on the track, Mercury Prize winning rapper Speech Debelle laces it with a bit of hip-hop. Last, but not least, we have Nutty P on production blending jazz and rock elements with a pop feel over hard hitting samples.

Follow Baby Sol on Soundcloud to get a limited download of "The Future" for free on February 17th. Full lyrics to the song are posted on her Youtube channel.

Omar: Dancing (K15 Remix)

In my never ending thirst for music, I came across the music of K15 in my usual quest. This guy is brilliant, to put it mildly. He claims that he was going through a musical block when he came across the "Dancing" a capella done by London soul legend Omar. Originally, the track was produced by Zed Bias, but K15 gave his share of the royal treatment by putting his own signature to the vocals. If music blocks are like this, I can only imagine the sounds that come out when his brain is in high gear. When you drop by his page, say thanks for the download.

Da U.A: My Life/Rap Is Not Pop

Texas hip-hop is as real as the founding city of New York. Da U.A, consisting of Derrick Parramore and Tyrone Bolden (Da Beat Digga), are proven representatives of the culture though their lyricism, music, and performances, in most cases booking DJs to help rock their sets in true fashion. I had the great privilege of DJing for them a few months back when they came down to perform at Underground Merger. If the flame was dim, these guys helped to bring back a raging inferno. I was on a musical high for weeks. As the saying goes; "You just had to be there."

As of lately, Da U.A has dropped some new music for us to get hype to. "My Life" that features the vocals of Latasha P., and a solo joint from P Dot Flo titled "Rap Is Not Pop", borrowing from a line from A Tribe Called Quest's "Check The Rhime". Both are gifts courtesy of J Soul Entertainment. Enjoy!

Here's footage from their Underground Merger performance with me on the wheels spinning their tracks.

Turntable Tuesdays: DJ Kool Emdee: Sound Killah II

Here's a ragga Drum n' Bass mix I cooked up a few days ago. Get ready to get rowdy!

Turntable Tuesdays: Mr. Bogey

I recently joined the Hear This website that's similar to Soundcloud and came across this excellent mix of House tunes by Mr. Bogey, who hails from The Netherlands. Show some love and give this brother a follow. He does great work.

SiR: The Bullet and The Gun (HMLT Edit)

There are some grooves that are simply undeniable. HMLT has proven so with his uptempo edit, flipping the original of "The Bullet and The Gun" by SiR, taken from his Seven Sundays EP that dropped on New Year's Day. Take my word, the whole project is a banger, so it's highly suggested to get on this. And there needs to be an extended version of this edit in the works. So I hope some type of deal is made to make that happen. Press play and dance!

Beldina: Ocean (B. Bravo Remix)

For this Monday night late night chill, you have to take your hats off and pay respect to B. Bravo for his remix of Belinda's "Ocean" track, where he combines the sounds of old school R&B and current musical styling. The smooth vocals coming from Belinda gliding over the track reminds me of a sunny spring day. Her sense of style and appearance are eye catching. And by the homage she pays to the vocal greats, she's next in line among the ranks of Grace Jones, Eartha Kitt, and Diana Ross.

Be sure to purchase her Intermission EP OUT NOW on iTunes, and have this remix on the house. Enjoy!

Moses Sumney: Mid-City Island

I may have to build a web or something to keep up with a lot of music that's being released. Last spring, Los Angeles based singer-songwriter and guitarist, Moses Sumney released his incredible work of art titled Mid-City Island EP, which he did the "throwback" thing and recorded it on a 4-track recorder. Rather than get into how great the EP sounds, i'll let you hear it for yourselves. Grab the whole EP for free from his Soundcloud page. Drop him a line to say thanks while you're there.
